When a manufacturer of small gate valves in the Netherlands inquired about CLIMAX’s welding capabilities, CLIMAX experts eagerly accepted the challenge. The bar was set high: The company needed to MIG weld 22 mm seats into a valve body through a 15 mm hole that was 45 mm deep.

CLIMAX team members put their heads together and performed successful weld testing to address the size and space restrictions. The solution was so successful that the customer bought two complete BW3000 AutoBoreWelder units for future projects. In addition, CLIMAX worked closely with a third-party automation company in Belgium to automate the process even further. The international manufacturing effort paid off – since adding the BW3000 to its capabilities, the customer has welded tens of thousands of valves. They have been able to reduce furnace brazing steps, increase throughput and meet the high quality standards required by the European Union.

CLIMAX Market Segment Technical Specialist Fitz Acheson has extensive expertise and on-the-ground experience helping CLIMAX customers on a global scale, with a local perspective. Fitz shares five factors customers facing similar challenges should keep in mind:

  • A strong network: CLIMAX is anywhere our customers need us to be. We make sure that our customers around the world receive the attention they deserve for the machine tool they purchase. With a strong network of trainers, sales people and technical support staff, our incredible after-sales support team keeps customers up and running when challenges in the field demand 100 percent capability.
  • Understanding of customers’ unique challenges: The diverse group of CLIMAX engineers and sales staff provide highly complex cross-functional capabilities. CLIMAX is always striving to learn more and push the limits of what is possible for our customers – ultimately saving them time and money. This internal capability, tightly coupled with CLIMAX’s international distributor network, creates a diverse language of understanding. When customers see that we’re able to understand their issues clearly, they are confident that the process will work, and we are able to quickly solve the problem.
  • Expert knowledge: CLIMAX experts have deep knowledge of the machining and welding industries and the projects that take place around the world. As they share this knowledge with customers, they keep their ears and eyes open in order to fully understand customers’ challenges. We incorporate customer feedback and ideas in the next iterations of our machine tools to continually address these challenges.
  • High-quality tools, high-quality support: In addition to our machine tools sturdy reputation, CLIMAX experts work to make relationships, trainings, technical and after-sales support a positive experience for our customers. The key to international relationships is ensuring that our distributors are backed up 100 percent, in all aspects of how they interface with CLIMAX personnel. Our highly resilient and flexible sales and technical support network enables customers to see seamless functionality, from purchasing to training, use, and beyond.
  • Niche capability: CLIMAX machine tools fit a special niche of capability. While made for a specific application, each machine tool is also capable of being used in unorthodox ways to accomplish alternate goals outside of standard configurations. With constant research and development, our diverse and ever-growing selection of machine tools helps spread knowledge and capabilities to a global audience.

CLIMAX products keep customers competitive in a changing environment with sound engineering, excellent training and a high level of technical support. The intelligence of the customers on the ground, faced with new challenges, feeds a healthy “specials” business of custom tools, allowing customers to tackle the most unusual applications with accuracy and repeatability.

Business growth is there for the taking, a win-win situation for all. CLIMAX provides a solid foundation for thousands of businesses, large and small, to keep the mechanical world up and running. Whether manufacturing, repairing or refurbishing, on a bridge, underground in a mine, in a machine shop, or deep in a power plant, the ever-innovative customer, outfitted with the CLIMAX machine tool capabilities, is an unstoppable force.

As promised in our September issue, we are giving you a closer look at the milling head assembly and how to get the results you’re looking for as you begin machining with your CLIMAX milling machine. We’ll review the key steps and issues associated with tramming the milling assembly.

The tramming plate is precision-machined to be parallel to the ram and perpendicular to the bed. In many cases the default X-axis alignment of the milling assembly will be sufficient. If more precision is needed, the milling head mounting plate is supplied with tramming screws. Repair technicians can use the screws to jack away the mounting plate from the tramming plate to adjust X-axis orientation and rotate it on the tramming plate to adjust Y-axis orientation of the milling assembly.

Here’s how:

  1. Attach a dial indicator with a magnetic base to the end of thMasteringMillingMachines-Image1e spindle.
  2. If the drive motor is installed, remove it from the spindle gearbox to enable easy hand-rotation of the spindle (Image 1).
  3. Position the milling assembly in a position where you can reach the bottom of the ram or the linear bed rails (image 2).
  4. Now, sweep the datum surface of the bed or ram with the indicator by rotating the spindle.
  5. Finally, tram the direction along the Y-axis by
  6. adjusting the top tramming screws. Then tram the
  7. directiMasteringMillingMachines-Image2on along the X-axis by adjusting the tramming screws on the milling head mounting plate. The mounting screws will have to be loosened slightly to make these adjustments. When both directions are adjusted, tighten the mounting screws (below).
  8. Remove the magnetic base and dial indicator, and reinstall the drive motor.
